“I didn’t know what I was going to do, how I was going to be able to keep on. And then, just when I was ready to give up, I found out about Shepherd’s Hope. If this is a dream, please don’t wake me up!”

Carolina’s acute pain needed attention and care, and she found both within the doors of Shepherd’s Hope. Through the dedication of devoted volunteers and committed community partners, Carolina is now pain free and she is so thankful.

“I’ve always been healthy and strong. Then you get sick and you need help. I’m so thankful to Shepherd’s Hope and all the people who made it possible for me to be well again!”

Claudio had lost his job and his medical insurance, and he doesn’t qualify for government health assistance. Then he became ill. Someone told him about Shepherd’s Hope, but Claudio thought he must be wrong. “Who would help you like that? And be so nice, too, according to my friend. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t believe him.”

But as Claudio’s symptoms worsened, he realized he didn’t have anything to lose and decided to seek help at Shepherd’s Hope. “I was amazed, astonished, so impressed. From the moment I entered the clinic, it was as if the people there couldn’t do enough to help you.”

Unfortunately, Claudio was sick on the inside. He needed diagnostic tests provided by Shepherd’s Hope compassionate community partners, as well as care from specialists. Ultimately, surgery was necessary to remove a tumor on his kidney. “But Shepherd’s Hope was with me all the way. I’m feeling better now, a bit stronger every day.”

Soon, Claudio will look strong on the outside AND be strong on the inside — thanks to the care of Shepherd’s Hope dedicated volunteers.

Maria had a good job with health insurance, two young, active children, a comfortable apartment and a happy outlook.

Then she fell ill.

“I tried to keep things together, but when I began to have serious absenteeism, my boss laid me off. Then, I couldn’t afford COBRA medical insurance payments and soon, I couldn’t pay my rent. I was so sick, but my biggest worry was my kids. My bad health really made my life come crashing down. I didn’t know what I was going to do and I was so scared.”

Luckily, Maria was able to move in with her relative. “I don’t know how I would have coped without her,” Maria says. And then one day, someone told her cousin about Shepherd’s Hope.

“My cousin rushed into the bedroom and was all happy and excited. She grabbed clothes from my suitcase, telling me to hurry and get dressed. I was exhausted and didn’t even understand what Shepherd’s Hope could do, but we took the kids and went off to the health center.”

Maria begins to cry as she relates what happened next. “We walked in and it was like a safe, warm cocoon. Everyone was so warm and welcoming—we were instant members of a big, loving family.”

Maria’s condition was serious and life-threatening—she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. But with Shepherd’s Hope—their loving and dedicated volunteers, the expertise and caring case management team, and the support of Shepherd’s Hope incredible community partners—Maria is recovering and her prognosis is favorable.

“I had no idea my life was going to fall apart because of my health situation. I don’t want to even imagine how things might have turned out if not for Shepherd’s Hope. As soon as I’m feeling strong again, I want to be a part of the warm and caring Shepherd’s Hope volunteer team—simply amazing!”
